Community praised as York sex attack investigation continues
Detectives investigating a serious sexual assault on a 18-year-old woman in the Acomb area of York have praised the local community for the ‘’outstanding’’ support given to the police enquiry.
Following media appeals including an E-fit of the unknown male suspect, together with house-to-house enquiries by officers, around 40 people have contacted the investigation team with useful information.
These fresh lines of enquiry are being carefully examined and acted upon by detectives.
A Facebook page set up by a concerned resident in Acomb, which has been supported by more than 1,800 people, has also been acknowledged by the police.
However, it is vital that the Facebook users contact the police or Crimestoppers if they have any information that could assist the investigation.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Raw, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘’The response from local people has been outstanding and demonstrates the strong community spirit that exists in Acomb and across York.
‘’We are truly grateful for the support and I can assure everyone that we are working very hard to solve this case.’’
The incident occurred in a mounded area of a field which links Westfield Place and Grange Lane in the Acomb area at some time between 6.50pm and 8pm on Saturday 20 February 2010.
The victim was approached from behind by an unknown man carrying a knife who pulled her towards bushes. She suffered scratches, bruises and cuts to her face and body in the attack.
Following treatment, the woman was able to give a detailed description of the suspect to the police which has been incorporated into an E-fit image.
He was described as a white man, aged in his late 20s, about 5ft 5in to 5ft 8in tall, medium build, dark cropped hair and facial features that included thin lips and a rounded chin with stubble. He has a deep voice and a local Yorkshire accent. He was wearing a dark-coloured Puffa-style jacket and light-coloured bottoms. The victim said the attacker smelt of alcohol and strong deodorant.
Witnesses or anyone with information that could help the investigation should contact York police on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting the reference number 12100027797.
